Acid Resistant Bricks Manufacturer in India

Acid resistant bricks are dense, low absorption clay bricks made to IS 4860 that resist acids, alkalis and solvents in industrial service. Kothari Corrosion Controllers has manufactured them at Odhav, Ahmedabad since 1969, in 230 x 114 x 38 mm and 230 x 114 x 75 mm, under the registered trade mark Acid Proof.

What Are Acid Resistant Bricks?

An acid resistant brick is a vitrified clay brick built to survive chemical attack rather than heat or load alone. Buyers, consultants and tender documents use several names for the same product: acid resistant bricks, acid proof bricks, acid resisting bricks, AR bricks, chemical resistant bricks and acid and alkali resistant bricks. All of them describe a dense, low porosity brick to IS 4860 that is laid in acid resisting mortar to protect concrete and steel.

How Acid Resistant Bricks Are Made

We select clays with minimal iron content, press them and fire them at high temperature so that the body fuses into a dense, vitrified mass. Low iron matters because iron in the body reacts with acid and opens a path into the brick. Dense firing matters because it keeps water absorption at or below 2%, and a brick that does not absorb liquid does not let acid inside. Each lot is checked for thermal durability and for resistance to acids and to physical and mechanical shock before despatch.

Where Acid Resistant Bricks Are Used

  • Reaction vessels and storage tanks holding acids, alkalis and solvents
  • Steel pickling and galvanising tanks with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid
  • Absorption towers, scrubbers and chimney flues, laid in potassium silicate mortar for service up to 900 C
  • Neutralising pits, ETP and ZLD tanks and effluent drains
  • Chemical process floors, acid storage yards, dyke walls and battery rooms
  • Electroplating and anodising tanks and floors

Typical industries are chemicals and bulk drugs, fertilisers, petrochemicals and refineries, steel and galvanising, power stations, textiles and dyeing, dairy and food processing, and pharmaceuticals.

38 mm or 75 mm: Choosing the Thickness

38 mm acid resistant bricks are used for chemical process floors, medium size vessels, tanks, towers, pits and drains. 75 mm acid resistant bricks are used for large reaction vessels, RCC tanks, chimneys, lagoons, sulphur melting pits and pickling tanks, where mechanical load, impact, thermal shock or chemical concentration is higher. Tanks that hold hot acid continuously are often lined in two courses with staggered joints. See brick sizes and price for quantities per square metre.

Are Acid Resistant Bricks Also Alkali Resistant?

Yes. Our bricks resist both acids and alkalis. In practice the mortar decides what the finished lining can handle. Furane and phenolic resin mortars cover general acid and alkali duty up to 170 C, cashew CNSL up to 190 C, and potassium silicate handles strong acids at high temperature up to 900 C. Silicate mortar is not used where alkalis are present. We manufacture the full range of acid resisting mortars, so the bricks and the mortar come from one source.

When Acid Resistant Bricks Are Not the Right Choice

Hydrofluoric acid, fluoride salts and strong hot alkalis attack the silica in clay bricks. For that service, carbon bricks laid in carbon filled mortar are used instead. Acid resistant bricks are also not a substitute for fire bricks in a furnace. The difference is explained in acid proof bricks vs fire bricks.

Supply, Export and Brick Lining Work

We supply acid resistant bricks to plants across India and export them to African countries, the Middle East, South America and across the Asian subcontinent. We also carry out complete acid proof brick lining work at site with our own trained applicators, from surface preparation and membrane to the cured lining.

Acid Resistant Bricks: Frequently Asked Questions

AR bricks is short for acid resistant bricks. They are dense, vitrified clay bricks made to IS 4860 that resist acids, alkalis and solvents, and are laid in acid resisting mortar to protect tanks, vessels, pits and floors in chemical plants.

The standard sizes are 230 x 114 x 38 mm and 230 x 114 x 75 mm. Kothari Corrosion Controllers also makes 40 mm and thicker bricks to order, and special shapes for curved vessels on larger orders.

IS 4860 Class I requires a minimum compressive strength of 700 kg/cm2 and a minimum flexural strength of 100 kg/cm2, with water absorption of 2% maximum and loss in weight in acid of 1.5% maximum.

Yes, the bricks resist both acids and alkalis. The mortar decides the limits of the finished lining: furane or epoxy mortar is used where alkalis are present, and silicate mortar is not.

Yes. Kothari Corrosion Controllers supplies acid resistant bricks across India and exports to African countries, the Middle East, South America and the Asian subcontinent from its works at Odhav, Ahmedabad.
