Quick Selection Guide
| Application | Typical chemicals | Brick | Usual mortar |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel pickling tanks | Hydrochloric or hot sulphuric acid | 75 mm acid resistant brick | Furane or potassium silicate, by acid and temperature |
| Chimney flues, ducts, scrubbers | Hot acid gas, condensate | Acid resistant brick | Potassium silicate, up to 900 C |
| ETP, ZLD and neutralising pits | Changing acid and alkaline effluent | 38 mm or 75 mm acid resistant brick | Furane or epoxy, not silicate |
| Reaction vessels and storage tanks | Process acids, alkalis, solvents | 75 mm brick, wedge or radial shapes | Chosen to the process |
| Battery rooms and acid storage yards | Sulphuric acid | 38 mm brick, or acid proof tiles | Furane or epoxy |
| Chemical process floors and drains | Spillage of acids, alkalis, solvents | 38 mm brick, or 75 mm under heavy load | Furane, phenolic or CNSL |
| Phosphoric acid and fluoride service | Hydrofluoric acid, fluorides | Carbon bricks | Carbon filled furane |
Mortar temperature limits: furane and phenolic 170 C, cashew CNSL 190 C, potassium silicate 900 C, epoxy, polyester and sulphur 90 C. Silicate mortar is never used where alkalis are present.
Acid Resistant Bricks for Pickling Tanks
Steel pickling and galvanising lines use hydrochloric acid or hot sulphuric acid, with steel coils and baskets that knock against the walls. These tanks are lined in 75 mm acid resistant bricks over an impervious membrane, often in two courses with staggered joints. Most leaks begin at the tank top, inlets and outlets, so those details are built with particular care. Rinse tanks and acid regeneration pits next to the line are lined the same way.
Acid Resistant Bricks for Chimneys, Flues and Scrubbers
Flue gas from boilers, furnaces and acid plants condenses into acid inside RCC chimneys, ducts and scrubber towers. Acid resistant bricks laid in potassium silicate mortar carry this service up to 900 C, where a resin mortar would fail. Radial bricks are used on curved chimney and tower walls. Silicate linings are given an acid wash after curing.
Acid Resistant Bricks for ETP and Neutralising Pits
Effluent treatment plants, neutralising pits, equalisation tanks, sludge sumps and ZLD chambers see effluent that swings between acidic and alkaline. Bricks are laid in furane or epoxy mortar, which resist both. Silicate mortar is not used here because alkalis attack it.
Acid Resistant Bricks for Reaction Vessels and Storage Tanks
MS and RCC reaction vessels, MSRL vessels, absorption towers and bulk acid storage tanks are lined in 75 mm bricks, with wedge or radial bricks to follow a curved shell. The lining is designed so that expansion of the steel does not open the joints. Sulphur melting pits, lagoons and large RCC tanks are also lined in 75 mm bricks, with the mortar selected to the operating temperature.
Acid Resistant Bricks for Battery Rooms and Acid Storage Yards
Battery charging rooms, battery formation halls, acid storage yards and dyke walls handle dilute and concentrated sulphuric acid at ambient temperature. Floors are laid in 38 mm bricks or in 15 mm to 20 mm acid proof tiles, jointed in furane or epoxy mortar, with dyke walls lined to the full spill height.
Acid Resistant Bricks for Chemical Process Floors
Process floors in chemical, bulk drug, fertiliser, electroplating, anodising, textile, dairy and food plants are laid in 38 mm bricks for general duty, or 75 mm bricks under heavy loads, impact and forklift traffic. The floor is laid to falls towards drains, and drains and channels are lined in the same system. More on floors is on our acid proof flooring page.
